Chocolate
Heaven Dateline: 3/01/99 "Handmade
in the USA, created with a French attitude" On a rainy Saturday morning we were walking in North Beach and decided
it was time to get out of the rain and warm up. Looking for a cup of hot
chocolate, we came across Truffles
at 754 Columbus Avenue. What a lucky find! The shop is warm, cozy, and inviting. I had a great hot chocolate In the early morning you might smell the chocolaty aroma of fresh truffles
being made the traditional French way. Chef Jean-Marc Gorce, formerly
of Fringale's restaurant, is in charge of making the truffles and his
wife, Casimira, does marketing and serves customers. They make a great
team and some truly fantastic truffles. With eighteen varieties to choose from, there is sure to be something
for everyone. Flavors include dark and milk chocolate with liquered and
non-liquered fillings. There is also a white chocolate version. Jean-Marc
has even come up with some inventive flavors, such as Earl Gray. After being enticed by the free truffle, we decided to buy an assortment
to take to dinner at a friend's house. At 5 for $1, it seemed like a real
bargain. You can get them in gift boxes for slightly more. There is also
a collection of ceramic cups, bowls, and goblets which can be purchased
filled with truffles. This is a great place to shop for anyone who enjoys
quality chocolate. Truffles is in the same block of Columbus Avenue as Graffeo coffee (pick
up some french roast hot from the roaster!) and Il Tavolino. You can order
online. You can even apply for your moment of internet glory on their
